Roots & Wings – An Integrative Bible Study for Discipleship (Facilitator’s Guide)

by Anne Chan with Edmund Chan

A 12 session study on Discipleship

Roots & Wings is the bible study guide for Covenant Evangelical Free Church (CEFC)’s Eightfold Core Curriculum for Discipleship which Rev Edmund Chan before he was on sabbatical for his post-graduate studies in 2002-2004. What was supposed to be an in-house congregational handout became Roots & Wings (the full story is in the book).

For those that know of Edmund Chan, he is structured and clear in his delivery of material. And this is evident in this guide book. The format for each session (excluding session 1 as it is a bit different due to it being the introduction) is broken up into 5 working days of the week. In each day there are a couple of questions on a particular passage.

For example Session 8, Putting First Things First – Biblical Priorities

Day 1: Our Human Weakness

Our Chronic Busyness (Luke 10:38-42)

1. In what ways are Mary and Martha similar and different?

2. Jesus said that Mary has chosen “the good portion” and the “one thing… necessary”. What does it tell us about what He considers necessary?

3. Are you more like Mary or Martha? Give reasons. How can you be more like Mary?

a. Ask the DG (discussion group) members to share their own evaluation of themselves (on a scale of 1 to 10) and why they assess themselves as such.

I am like Mary (1= a little, 10= a lot)

I am like Martha (1= a little, 10= a lot)

Day 2: The Resulting Problem

Majoring on the Minor (2 Tim 3:1-7)

1. How would you define “godliness”? Why is godliness a key priority in life and ministry?

… ending with Day 5: The Empowered Life of Roots and Wings

I think you can see the flow in this snap shot of session 8. There’s more than enough relevant questions to go through. What I like about this is that it is written by Singaporean authors, so no local contextualisation is needed. This is good for groups that want to be more intentional about discipleship in their groups, and is very group-centric. Meaning the questions will ask about how is it related to your DG experience, there’s also a learning agreement to ensure all are on the same page.
